DWST extends its best wishes to Fr. Vic Castro, SVD on his birthday
Father Vic is DWST professor of Catechetics. As he is not in good health right now, as we greet him on his birthday, we also pray for his fast recovery. Below is write-up of him from the XVD FB wall and shared bt Fr. Fiel, SVD.
FR. VICENTE ‘Vic’ CASTRO, SVD
Birthday: November 25
Missionary to the SVD Central Province
Former Missionary to Philippines Southern Province and Rome
Happy Birthday, Fr. Vic!
“I had the opportunity to talk to Fr. Vic Castro after around 50 years. He is the same warm personality of old, and told me that he spent most of his life in the missions. I knew his brother, the late Fr. Tony Castro, and his family in Calapan. It was a nostalgic moment for me. Happy Birthday, Fr. Vic, and God bless!” – Samuel Yap
------------
Fr. Vic is a Mindoreno from Calapan, Or. Mindoro, born on November 25, 1940. He joined the SVD, and pronounced his religious vows in 1960. He was ordained in 1966 in Rome.
Fr. Vic studied also in Rome for his Licentiate in Theology.
He was assigned to mission work in Mindoro and Surigao.
His main mission work in the pastoral field centered in the pioneering stage of the SVD missions in Surigao. The SVD Surigao missions started in 1973, upon the invitation of the new Bishop, Miguel B. Cinches, SVD. The Divine Word missionaries came and took over the whole of Siargao Island. Fr. Redempto Maniwang, SVD, was the first SVD priest assigned to the Parish and the rest of Siargao Island until more SVDs arrived to take care the latter. Fr. Vic was among the pioneering SVDs who joined Fr. Maniwang. The others were Fr. Max Abalos, Fr. John Rutgers, Bro. Efren Elogon, Fr. Isagani Tecson, Fr. Eduardo Rocha, Fr. Gil Espuelas, Fr. Salvador Conrado, and many SVD regents who meanwhile were ordained priests.
He also worked in Baguio based at the Retreat house, as director of the school in Pacdal.
The Generalate tapped him to work in Rome and he served as the Editor of the Arnoldus Nota, the SVD publication of the Generalate (Rome).
Fr. Vic also taught Catechetics at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay.
For now, he resides at the Villa Cristo Rey in Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City.
Fr. Vic has served the Society well, in the remotest mission fields and in the circles in the Generalate.
May the Lord bless you with more years, as you enter your 76th year.
Happy birthday, Fr.Vic!
